Estimation – Video This video covers estimation. The video is meant to be used as an introduction or review video, and is designed to entertain and teach students while they work on the handout. It is perfect for students between 3rd and 5th grade, or year 4 to year 6. The video covers estimation, rounding, and sampling. It introduces the ideas and how they are used in the real world. Rounding – Level 1 This two page worksheet covers basic rounding. It uses number lines to help students visualize where the actual number is. Students should already know their place value up to one thousand and be able to read a number line. Student misunderstanding: Lots of students get confused with rounding. Stained Glass Rounding Review – Level 1 This art worksheet reviews rounding. Students round to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. Each student chooses their own colors to create a unique art project. Estimating – Level 1 This one page HALLOWEEN worksheet is an estimation practice page. Students estimate the problems to the nearest whole number. After they answer the problems they shade in the corresponding shapes to create a scary picture. Key concept: Students need to understand the difference between whole numbers and decimals (pieces). Multiplication using Estimation Level 2 This one page worksheet uses one and two digit multiplication to introduce estimation. Helpful hint: When you’re multiplying by multiples of 10 you can multiply the counting numbers and then add the 0’s to the final answer. Example: 30 x 50 can be solved by multiplying the 3 and 5, and then adding the two zeros to the 15. Answer: 1,500. Preview Print Answers

Division using Estimation Level 2 This one page worksheet divides by one and two digit numbers to introduce estimation. Helpful hint: As the numbers get bigger it helps to refer to the numbers as tens. Example: 718 ÷ 92 can be estimated to 720 ÷ 90, which means you have 72 tens ÷ 9 tens or 72 ÷ 9 = 8.
