Equivalent Fractions - Level 1

This is a three page worksheet on equivalent fractions. Students use and create shaded figures to visualize equivalent fractions.

Key concept: Understanding that even though the pieces are different sizes, they are still equal. Think about a piece of pie that you cut in half. Even though you now have two pieces, you still have the same amount.

Equivalent Fractions - Level 2

This is a three page worksheet on equivalent fractions. Students multiply and divide by one to change fractions. In other words, what ever you do to the top you must do to the bottom and vise versa.

Key concept: Students need to understand that 1 can be written as a fraction. Examples: 2/2, 3/3, 6/6, and so on. Also, anything multiplied or divided by 1 stays the same. Example: 4 x 1 = 4 and 4 ÷ 1 = 4

Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers - Level 1

This is a three page worksheet on visualizing improper fractions and mixed numbers. Students use shapes to better understand these fractions.

Talk about: IMPROPER (not right), ask students what looks wrong with an improper fraction (top number is bigger than bottom number). MIXED, what does your mom do while cooking? You have a whole number and a fraction. They are mixed.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Common Denominators
Level 1

One page worksheet on adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. It also includes simplifying fractions.

Student misunderstanding: Students try to add the denominators (bottom numbers). If the denominators are the same then the pieces are the same size. This allows us to combine the pieces into one fraction.

Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators - Level 1

This one page worksheet covers adding fractions with unlike denominators. It does not have any simplifying or improper fractions in the final answers.

Student misunderstanding: Why do we need common denominators? If the denominators are different then the pieces are different sizes. You can not add if the pieces are not the same size.

Changing Decimals to Fractions
Level 1

This two page worksheet introduces changing decimals to fractions. It covers up to thousandths and includes simplifying fractions.

Helpful hint: When changing a decimal to a fraction, every digit to the right of the decimal means a zero in the denominator. Example: 0.19 has two digits to the right of the decimal, so the fraction would be 19/100 (the denominator has two zeros).
